Europeans Remain Cool to Apple’s Thoughts on Music
Sunday, February 11th, 2007 at 2:00 PM - by John Martellaro
A cool European reaction to Mr. Jobs Thoughts on Music was cited at the StarNewsOnline Sunday. According to the article,"Analysts, music industry representatives and consumer organizations praised his [Mr. Jobs] apparent willingness to discuss the copy-protection issue but said the proposal seemed to be an effort to shift the focus of the debate."
In Steve Jobs' Thoughts on Music posting last week, it was pointed out that "For Europeans, two and a half of the big four music companies are located right in their backyard." The blunt suggestion was that the owners of the music, based in Europe, and the European legislatures should be working out their differences regarding music DRM.
"He's trying to move the responsibility away from Apple and turn this into a trans-Atlantic trade issue," said Torgeir Waterhouse, senior adviser to the Norwegian Consumer Council.
By suggesting that the European owners of the music and the European legislators work out these issues, analysts think that Apple may have been trying to insulate itself. As the heat gets turned up in Europe for Apple to make songs purchased in iTunes playable on other music players, Apple may have learned an important lesson from Microsoft's experience with the European Commission.
