Fujitsu 1.8-inch Hard Drive In Development

Fujitsu Ltd. plans to enter the 1.8-inch hard drive market in mid 2007. The company showed off a prototype drive at the Computex trade show in Taiwan, according to ComputerPartner, and plans to roll out production models buy July of next year.
Until now, Fujitsu has focused on desktop and laptop-size hard drives, but sees strong growth in the smaller drives over the next few years. The company said it expects the market to grow from 16 million units in 2005 to 90 million by 2010.
Consumers encounter Toshiba’s 1.8-inch hard drives in the iPod in 30GB and 60GB capacities. Fujitsu expects its first drive will fall in the 60GB capacity range.
Toshiba, however, has quite a head start on Fujitsu. It has been shipping 1.8-inch drives for several years, and demonstrated a 200GB model on Monday.
