Google Cell Phone In the Works
Sunday, March 18th, 2007 at 3:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Google is developing a cell phone of its own, but contrary to rumors that it will compete with Apple's iPhone, the company's product is aiming for the low end of the market. TimesOnline reports that the basic phone Google is working on is intended to bring the company's products and services to users that don't already have a computer.
A Google executive revealed the cell phone program during the CeBIT trade fare. Google representatives, however, are not discussing the program other than to say "mobile is an important area for Google."
Apple has teamed with Google to include the search company's technology in the soon to be released iPhone iPod/smart phone device. Since Google CEO Eric Schmidt is also on the Apple board, there was speculation that a Google-branded Internet-capable phone would pose a conflict of interest. But by sticking to the low end of the cell phone market, the company will likely be able to avoid the iPhone's market and maintain its friendly releationship with the Mac and iPod maker.
The Apple iPhone is scheduled to ship in June with a US$499 price tag for a 4GB model, or $599 for an 8GB version. There is no word on when Google may ship its mobile phone product, or how much it will cost.
