The results of a recent Harris poll showed that only nine percent of Americans plan to buy a Blu-ray player in 2008, according to TVPredictions.com on Wednesday.

Harris surveyed 2,529 U.S. adults in April and asked them about their intentions now that the HD disc format war is over.

Harris reported that the "intent-to-buy" is low, even though 70 percent of Americans are aware that Blu-ray won the HD format war.

Noting that 87 percent of Americans already have a DVD player, Harris said, "It seems that the recently resolved High-Definition format war is not motivating consumers to purchase the advanced DVD players any time soon."

Harris also estimated that 10 percent of HDTV owners in the U.S. have a Blu-ray player. About five percent have a Playstation 3 which has a Blu-ray player.

iPO notes that Blu-ray adoption may occur faster in Europe and Asia, areas that aren’t experiencing an economic slow down like the U.S. That could be one reason why Blu-ray movie title prices remain high in the U.S. -- namely to avoid the clandestine exportation of inexpensive titles to more affluent customers in the rest of the world, as has happened with the iPhone.

This week, Amazon offered a "buy three pay for two" Blu-ray titles promotion for a limited time. However, even with the Amazon discount, three Blu-ray movies that retail for US$120.00 could still cost US$50.00 plus shipping. For many Americans, that’s still too much when DVDs at Wal-Mart are selling for $5.99, Apple TV rentals are $2.99 and Netflix offers unlimited, but one-at-a-time, rentals for about $8/month.
