Heroes 1.22 - "Landslide"

Heroes 1.22 - "Landslide"
Original Airdate: May 14th, 2007

Wow. My frustrations of last week have pretty much evaporated, because this eppy is a thing of beauty: tight, cohesive, and packed with enough "WTF" moments to make even the most spoiler-loving fankid’s head spin.

As you all probably guessed, Peter somehow gets control of his radioactive power and Claire doesn’t have to shoot him. Claire, Peter and GeicoTed take off, with Sylar hot on their trail (Sylar, by the way, seems to have developed a liking for Pinkberry or some other yogurt-like frozen dessert food thing).

Then Clea DuVall shows up and arrests GeicoTed, but Sylar intercepts the prison transport van, transforming poor GeicoTed into dead, brain-sucked Ted. Very sad! Maybe GeicoTed can get a job on that new Cavemen series, which sounds like a high concept companion to early UPN favorite Homeboys in Outer Space (that is to say: completely atrocious).

Meanwhile, Hiro and Ando go to some sort of sword repair shop and run into none other than George Takei! This is seriously the perfect moment for George Takei to return, and he basically tells Hiro that he knows everything and trains him in the fine art of using ancient, symbol-laden samurai swords to frak people up. These scenes are beautifully done: cinematically shot, dramatically lit, and weighted with emotional heft in a way that isn’t cheesy. You can almost see the serious little soul patch forming on Hiro’s chin as he trains.

The Jessica/D.L. stuff, which was boring last week, is actually completely kickass this time out. In fact, it may be my favorite part of the episode. The duo continues on their pursuit of Micah, only to run into Linderman himself. Linderman tries to bribe Jesscia with a whole bunch of money to kill D.L. and abandon Micah. Instead, she rather awesomely allows Niki to take control (at least, this was my reading of it did other people get that, or did it seem like something else entirely? I’m still not completely clear on the nuts and bolts of her ability).

Linderman shoots D.L. and is about to kill Niki, but then D.L. somehow manages to totter to his feet and reach inside Linderman’s head and squeeze his brain really hard. It is awesome and gross and I think Linderman’s dead. D.L., you haven’t been allowed many jaw-dropping moments on this show, but that was too cool.

Speaking of Micah, he’s still chilling with Candice, whose favorite hobbies include stuffing her face with french fries and making foreshadow-y comments about people being superficial and stuff. Oh, manI will be so pissed if the "real" Candice looks like Missy Peregrym in a fat suit. I hate, hate fatsuit storytelling. Don’t go there, Heroes.

Linderman has Micah use his machine whisperer abilities to win the election for Nathan. Incidentally, Linderman also bestows an extra special handshake upon Nathan’s wife and she can walk now. Pretty sweet. If Rena Sofer sticks it out on this series, can we revoke her show-killer status? Or is that asking too much?

Finally, Bennet and Matt are on a quest to destroy that fabled "tracking system," only to discover that the tracking system is a person Molly. Bennet seems OK with killing her, Matt does not. And Mohinder is most definitely not, leading to a John Woo stand-off, guns pointed everywhere!

It all ends with Sylar doing his little bit of Heroes performance art we’ve seen in all the previews: "boom." Yikes.

I think the thing that makes me love this episode oh-so-much apart from all the action and aforementioned "WTF" moments is the very comic book-y Marvel Team-Up-style quality. We have all these fascinating pairings some obvious, some new, some reaching a natural culmination flowing into each other. And unlike last week, where these various storylines felt a little fragmented, these fit together naturally, like the most elegant of puzzle pieces.

I love the bonds forming between Mo and Molly and Candice and Micah the kids make their adult counterparts more interesting and give them some dimension. I love the loose cannon element of the Bennet/Matt team-up did I mention that Bennet totally shoots Eric Roberts? Twice? And I love, love the new developments in the Jessica-Niki/D.L. situation, which could provide a lot of fodder for next season.

So let’s go, Heroes! Take us out with a bang (sorry, sorry, couldn’t resist. I’m giving myself ten demerits).
