‘Hey, Where’d My iPod Go?’ Commuters Ask Frequently

Unsurprisingly, the surging popularity of the iPod has brought with it an increase in the number of reported incidents of the MP3 player being lost. Noreen O’Donnell, writing for The Journal News, reports that 10 to 15 of them go lost every month on New York state’s Metro-North Railroad. A railroad spokesman said that "almost all of them get back to their owners."

Ms. O’Donnell also reports that Andrew Hearst dropped his iPod onto the tracks of a New York City subway and got it back when a stranger jumped down and retrieved it for him. Mr. Hearst has a photo of it on his blog, complete with the tale of the person who was willing to grab his MP3 player even though he was simply asking for someone to help him back onto the platform after he jumped down to get it.

Unfortunately, PC World magazine editor Harry McCracken wasn’t so lucky. He lost his iPod on an airline flight and never recovered it, prompting him to write on his blog: "There aren’t many things more personal than one’s taste in music, and so the notion of a stranger listening to my tunes is a little unsettling." An American Airlines spokesman approached by Ms. O’Donnell had no idea how many iPods and other portable devices are reported missing every month.
