Hitachi Gives up on RPTV, Thin HDTV is In
Wednesday, November 7th, 2007 at 3:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Hitachi has ceased production of its LCD and CRT-based rear projection TVs (RPTV) in North America, according to engadget on Thursday.
"While this might not come as much of a surprise to us, this is a sure sign that the average consumers idea of what a big screen, HD TV is has shifted from a monstrous box to a slim flat panel," Steven Kim wrote for engadget.
Mr. Kim said he expects other manufacturers to pull the plug on RPTVs as customers flock to "in" thin LCD and Plasma displays.
iPO notes that the LCD and CRT-based RPTVs are an older technology that has been fading for some time. Sony and Samsung, for example, remain vested for now in the more modern LCoS and DLP/LED RPTV systems which get thinner each year. However, with the advances being made in LED backlit LCD flat panels, the days of even these more modern RPTVs, which only constitute a few percent of overall sales, may be numbered. Currently, their primary advantage is a much lower price for a given screen size.
