India Gives iPhone 3G Warm Reception
Thursday, August 21st, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Despite its higher price compared to other countries, Apples iPhone 3G was met with lines outside Indias Gurgaon Mall and several shops in Delhi, according to IBNLive. There were questions before the launch that India customers might not go for the combination iPod and smartphone because if its unsubsidized price starting at INR 31,000 (about US$713.93).
While lines for the U.S. iPhone 3G launch on July 11 began forming hours -- and in some cases days -- in advance, Indias lines began forming several hours ahead of the midnight launch.
The first iPhone 3G sold went to a college student named Swati who had been standing in line since 7PM. She was handed a phone by Sanjay Kapoor, Bharti Mobile Services president. Bharti is one of Apples iPhone partners in India along with Vodafone.
Along with higher iPhone prices, India customers are also limited to the slower EDGE wireless data network because the country hasnt built out its faster 3G network yet. Despite the limitations, however, the iPhone 3G looks to already be popular with Indias smartphone buyers.
