Internet Radio Given Short Reprieve
Tuesday, May 1st, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
The U.S. Copyright Royalty Board has given Internet Radio a short reprieve by pushing back the due date to July 15, 2007 for the onerous fees recently imposed, according to C|Net on Tuesday.
In stricter language, the CRB report says the payments are due "45 days after the last day of the month in which the Copyright Royalty Judges issues their final determination adopting these rates and terms." [Page 30].
In March, the board issued a new ruling on fees Internet radio stations must pay, and the rate would have put most stations out of business. Moreover, the payments were initially declared to be retroactively due on May 15th.
The SaveNetRadio group is supporting a new House bill. H.R. 2060, introduced by Jay Inslee (D-WA) and Donald Manzullo (R-IL) that would invalidate the boards decision. The group has said, "We feel strongly that Congress could not possibly have intended a structure whereby Internet radio services pay 60% to 300% of their revenue in royalties."
The battle isnt over, and the SaveNetRadio group has been soliciting listener support at their Website.
