Internet Radio Urged to Go Silent on June 26th

Those who listen to Internet radio in iTunes or via the Website directly may be in for a surprise next Tuesday. In a show of protest for the new royalty rates to be imposed by the Federal Government’s Copyright Royalty Board (CRB), Internet radio stations are being urged to go silent on June 26th.

A report at the Radio and Internet Newsletter (RAIN) by Kurt Hanson is urging all Internet radio stations to "commit to a stream that is primary more than 50% silent (although bleeps, surf noise, and static could all count as ’silence’), with occasional PSAs interspersed." Full songs would not, Mr. Hanson said, be in the spirit of silence.

The protest is aimed at bringing attention to the recent decision by the CRB that would impose onerous new fees on a radio broadcasters. Many sites have said that the decision would put them out of business.

Live365.com, AccuRadio.com and KCRW have already committed to the protest. Others will be announced at the RAIN site.

A Website has been set up to assist those who want to protest the effect the new rates will have on Internet Radio, SaveNetRadio.org. The site has information on how listeners can contact their federal government representatives to protest the massive increase in rates supported by the RIAA.
