JVC Announces 2nd Generation LCD Technology

One of the weaknesses of LCD TV displays has been the handling of rapid motion. JVC is seeking to solve that problem with a new technology that adds an interpolated frame and new algorithms for detecting motion, the company announced last week..

The technology, called Clear Motion Drive (CMD), will be released in the fall as part of a new line of 120 Hz refresh LCD displays in 37, 42 and 47-inch sizes of HDTVs with 1080 x 1920 resolution.

JVC explained, "A JVC algorithm detects the movement in images and increases the frame rate to 120 Hz to create an interpolated image that is displayed as two frames the original plus the newly interpolated frame in the same time it takes a conventional (60Hz) set to display a single frame. This delivers moving images without blurring or flickering. And compared to other frame doubling technologies, inserting an interpolated frame maintains image brightness."

The displays, with an 8 ms response time, will incorporate a fifth generation digital imaging engine running on the JVC 32-bit Genessa chip. The displays also use 10-bit color depth, and the color gamut is 102 percent of the NTSC standard. The new HDTVs will incorporate HDMI 1.3 inputs.

The first generation technology, on 720p TVs, detected only horizontal motion. The second generation CMD is able to detect motion in all directions.

The new models are: the 47-inch LT-47X898, the 42-inch LT-42X898 and the 37-inch LT-37X898.
