Microsoft Also Likes DRM-free Music

Microsoft, despite the need for DRM in is Zune subscription plans, recently said it plans to offer DRM-free music from EMI and others, according to ZDNet on Wednesday.
"Weve been saying for a while that we are aware that consumers want to have unprotected content," said Zune marketing director Jason Reindorp. However, he did not announce a time table.
Mr. Reindorp said that the [DRM-free music] move could help Microsoft by loosening the coupling between iTunes and iPod.
According to NPD, sales of the Zune have been slipping. In January, the Zune had 9.9 percent of the hard disc based music players, but that fell to 8.8 percent in February.
Microsoft also plans to kick off another wave of advertising for the Zune. Mr. Reindorp said that the initial ads were about establishing the brand while "... the new advertising, which includes a TV spot, focuses on features where the Zune stands out from the iPod, such as its support for subscription music, its larger screen and built-in FM tuner," ZDNet reported.
