Microsoft Waffles on Blu-ray Support for Xbox

Earlier this year, Microsoft appeared to be covering its bets in the Blu-ray/HD DVD war by conceding that they want to be able to go with either format on the Xbox if consumer choice demands it. Now, Microsoft has reiterated firm support for HD DVD.

In the Gamerscoreblog from Microsoft Xbox and Games employees, a note said, "Just want to clear up a few things surrounding several erroneous stories regarding alleged comments from Peter Moore about Xbox 360 supporting Blu-ray. Simply put...These reports are completely incorrect...."

The Blog went on to say, "It is important to understand the context in which that statement was made. We firmly stand behind the HD DVD format as the best choice for consumers. Current reports indicating that Microsoft has a back-up plan, which includes Blu-ray support are incorrect. Were fully committed to HD DVD and have absolutely no plans to support other optical formats."

The war between HD DVD and Blu-ray currently continues, with each side claiming that all is well. Recently, the HD DVD camp published sales numbers for stand alone players, an area where they do well thanks to low unit prices, but they neglected to include PS3 sales in those numbers.

The statement from Microsoft appears to succumb to the politics of the moment, perhaps based on pressure from the HD DVD group. Right now, that camp needs all the unity it can get. Blu-ray movie titles continue to account for three out of every four HD movie sold on disc, as of March 2007, according to June’s Widescreen Review Magazine.
