Mossberg: Flash for iPhone on the Way
Wednesday, July 4th, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Adobe Flash-based Web sites are everywhere today, which means that Apples iPhone offers a limited Web browsing experience. That wont last for long, according to Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal. If Mr. Mossberg is correct, Safari on the iPhone could get Flash support within the next couple of months.
"At launch, the iPhone version of the Safari browser is missing some plug-ins needed for playing common types of Web videos. The most important of these is the plug-in for Adobes Flash technology," he said. "Apple says it plans to add that plug-in through an early software update, which I am guessing will occur within the next couple of months."
Adding Flash support to the iPhone will go a long way towards offering the full Internet experience Apple CEO Steve Jobs bragged about, instead of -- as he called it -- the "baby Internet."
Adding new features and enhancing existing features on the iPhone will be a much easier process than is involved with other cell phones. Since iPhone runs OS X, Apple can push fixes and updates to the device instead of requiring users to return their phone to a service center, or even worse, buy a new model with the features pre-installed.
Presumably, any new features or enhancements will be installed on the iPhone via Apples iTunes application.
