    • Go Away White is an album I've been waiting more than 20 years to hear, and the good news is that it was worth the wait.  The latest -- and last, no...for real this time -- album from

MythTV vs. Tivo Series 3

The wealth of new delivery systems for video like Joost and Apple TV has also confronted customers with many hardware options for both recording and viewing video content. DVRPlayground recently assessed some customer options in their Part 1 and Part 2 series on MythTV vs. Tivo Series 3.

The first article asked the question: "Does an open source solution like MythTV stand a chance against the marketing power and research behind the TiVo Series 3?"

Both products provide a DVR function and basically accomplish the same core task, "but that is where the similarities end," Doug Felteau wrote. MythTV requires much more technical expertise to set up while the Tivo package (Series 3 is for HDTV) is much more pre-packaged.

Even so, the complexities and options of both system can be daunting. Issues such as the details of HD recording, remote controls, software features, and comparable products weighed heavily on the minds of experienced users who weighed in after Part 1.

"Basically a consumer has to get the product that works best in their environment so if you use CableCARDs to pull down your HD content, MythTV is not an option as your main DVR. With that said if you are concerned about the monthly and up-front costs of the Series 3 and watch [over the air] OTA HD content, MythTV provides a wonderful and themeable menu system with additional features that you will never find on a TiVo," the author concluded.
