NBC’s Direct Not Ready for Prime Time
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 at 3:00 PM - by John Martellaro
While NBCs Hulu system is designed for streaming and is platform agnostic, their new NBC Direct product is intended to provide downloads and offline viewing of TV shows. Its PC only and not even ready for its beta designation, according to ars technica on Wednesday. Worse, it does nothing but confuse viewers.
Jacqui Cheng gave NBC Direct a thorough testing, and never was able to download a TV show. "...we found that the limitations were endless, rendering the service impractical and overall not worth the effort required to use it," Ms. Cheng wrote.
Currently, the content consists of only the latest show from six of NBCs shows: Life, Bionic Woman, 30 Rock, The Office, Friday Night Lights, and Heroes. Thats six videos, total.
The oddball subscription system was considered pointless and annoying. By comparison, Hulu seemed like a "glorious, freedom-filled haven."
Perhaps the worst mistake NBC has made is launching two separate services side by side. The author believes that most viewers have no idea what the two services are, how they differ, and how to get them to work. One non-techy person she spoke to wondered, "Cant I just get those shows on iTunes?"
