    • Mystics Anonymous is the brainchild project of Jeff Steblea, a fantastic songwriter and good friend of mine, as well. In fact, I even played the drums on all but one of the tracks on this album. Jef

NPD: Apple Had 75.6% of MP3 Player Market in Q2

The NPD Group's latest data shows Apple with a 75.6% share of the U.S. digital music player market during the second quarter of 2006, which ended June 30. Analyst Ross Rubin told IDG News: "Apple has done a great job of focusing consumers' attention on digital music in their products through millions of dollars in advertising."

SanDisk came in a distant second with 9.7% of the market. Creative had 4.3%, Samsung 2.5%, and Sony 1.9%.

While some analysts are concerned that sales of the iPod and other MP3 players could slow down dramatically as cell phones with music-playing capabilities come on the market, Mr. Rubin "says that companies focused on stand alone digital music players should remain competitive against the mobile phone industry because their devices have greater capacity, better user interfaces, better integration with online music services, and stronger DRM (digital rights management) support," according to IDG.

Mr. Rubin also noted that cellular service carriers have "hindered the popularity of using mobile phones as music players because they have been charging more for purchasing songs online than their rivals in the stand alone music player business." In addition, they've made it difficult to send cell phone music files to and from computers, further hampering the technology and irritating consumers.

Cell phone companies are improving the experience, however, so "the fight is still in its early rounds," according to Mr. Rubin.
