NRF: Four Million New HDTVs for Super Bowl
Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008 at 3:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Its expected that almost 4 million high definition TVs will be sold to those planning to watch the Super Bowl in HD, according to a consumer survey by the National Retail Federation.
Young adults, ages 18-24, are expected to be the best customers with about 10 percent saying they plan to buy an HDTV for the big event which annually attracts about a billion viewers.
The number of customers planning to buy an HDTV for the Super Bowl represents about twice that reported last year, according to the story in TWICE. The Retail Advertising and Marketing Association (RAMA), a division of NRF, was engaged to study the consumer trends prior to the Super Bowl.
Smart shoppers hold off on major purchases like televisions and entertainment centers until retailers are offering special discounts and promotions," said Mike Gatti with RAMA. "After a lackluster holiday season, retailers will be courting consumers with their very best deals on electronics, furniture and even food in anticipation of the Super Bowl."
Circuit City is offering a special promotion. HDTVs larger than 32 inches bought by 4 PM on January 30th will be delivered and set up in time for the Super Bowl on February 3rd.
Note: for a comprehensive guide on selecting and installing an HDTV, see John Martellaros Fireside Guide: Moving to High Definition, a six part series published in November and December 2007.
