Netflix Customers Feeling Blu—Surcharge Added
Wednesday, October 8th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
On Wednesday, Netflix advised its customers who rent Blu-ray movies that theyll have to pay an extra $1.00 per month to continue that service.
As promised earlier in the year by Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, Netflix has raised the monthly price for those renting Blu-ray movies by US$1.00.
The e-mail said, "As you may know, Blu-ray movies are more expensive that standard definition movies. As a result, were going to start charging $1 a month (plus applicable taxes) in addition to your monthly membership charge for unlimited access to Blu-ray movies."
Netflix said that the added charge will be automatic on the next billing cycle on or after November 5. Customers who want to opt-out can go into their account settings and remove the Blu-ray option.
Even though Netflix has revealed that Blu-ray rentals are still in the single digits, percentage-wise, the increased cost of procuring the Blu-ray movies has apparently forced Netflix to make the change.
Netfix didnt say if the charge would be removed at some future date when Blu-ray discs become cheaper, but given the history of charges like this, thats probably unlikely.
