New Display Technologies Demoed by Sony and Toshiba
Sunday, April 8th, 2007 at 3:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Two new display technologies have recenly been demonstrated, OLED and FED, in two reports by Gizmodo and Engaget.
FED. Field Emission Display is "a technology that is similar to SED but that uses a grid of carbon nanotubes to emit the electrons that excite phosphor dots in order to create the image," according to Gizmodo. A contrast ratio of 20,000:1 and a screen brightness of 400 cd/m^2 was reported.
OLED. Organic Light Emitting Diode. "Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology's new 20.8-inch model is apparently the largest yet developed that's based on low-temperature poly-silicon technologies," according to Engadget. A 21-inch (52 cm) device with 1280 x 768 resolution was demonstrated.
Toshiba/Matsushita thinks that the OLED may see use in the next generation of TV sets and monitors. Sony is planning for a 2009 release of the FED systems.
