New iPod Utility Uses iPod to Lock Macs

PodSmith is a new application for Mac users that allows an iPod to be function as a key, locking and unlocking a specified Mac simply by plugging in or removing the iPod. Additionally, the software offers more specific synchronization features than found in iTunes.

PodSmith's Screen Lock feature watches for your iPod and will grant you access to the Mac when it's plugged in and will automatically lock the screen when it's unplugged. Simple password support for unlocking is also available, in case you forget your iPod.

The AutoSync features of PodSmith enable a user to specify what they exactly want to synchronize, and goes a step further by allowing Safari's bookmarks, for example, to be replaced with those on the iPod and then revert back to as they were when the iPod is removed. Doing so enables users to use their bookmarks on another Mac or user account without fear of overwriting the current bookmarks or merging the bookmarks on the iPod with those on the Mac.

PodSmith is a free download and costs $20. Bulk pricing is available for as little as $5 a copy.
