Nielsen//NetRatings Admits Podcasting Inaccuracies

Nielsen//NetRatings on Wednesday claimed that over nine million audio and five million video podcasts had been downloaded during the previous 30 days, but the firm's analyst, Michael Lanz, on Thursday admitted that music downloads could have been included in that number.

"Depending on how narrowly people interpreted the question about 'podcasting,' there are some music downloads there, too," Mr. Lanz told MarketWatch's Frank Barnako. He noted that music files were included as an option when the survey was presented. "Few people would argue that music downloads are more popular than podcasts," Mr. Barnako wrote.

The research firm also admitted to the columnist that its news release headlined "Podcasting Gains an Important Foothold Among U.S. Adult Online Population" wasn't quite accurate either. Nielsen//NetRatings confused the act of creating a podcast with the act of downloading one, a Nielsen spokeswoman told Mr. Barnako, which is why it titled a chart showing podcast downloads over the past 30 days: "Market Size Estimation of Audio and Video Podcasters."
