Nokia CFO: iPhone to Grow High-end Phone Market
Sunday, May 13th, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Apples iPhone isnt due until late June, but cell phone manufacturer Nokia is already seeing it as a catalyst for high-end mobile phones sales throughout the market. Company CFO Rick Simonson sees Apples combination iPod and smart phone as a catalyst to draw consumer eyes towards more expensive multimedia cell phones, according to Reuters.
"The [U.S.] consumer ... hasnt had a lot of choice to go out and purchase these kind of higher-end, feature-rich multimedia devices," he said. "If [the iPhone] can help that market grow, I think that gives us an opportunity."
In essence, Nokia - the largest cell phone maker - is hoping its high-end products like the N73 and N95 handsets can ride on the iPhones coat tails.
What Apples iPhone will bring to the market is a new multi-touch and user friendly interface, all the features of an iPod, and contact and calendaring features in a single package. What Nokia is hoping the iPhone brings to the market is product awareness and a new interest in its multimedia-capable cell phones.
Mr. Simonson said "The iPhone is interesting. Its very much a validation of what weve been doing, in terms of saying there is a multimedia device out there that people will pay for."
