One-inch HDD Market ‘To Take Serious Hit in 2006’
Tuesday, September 20th, 2005 at 3:00 PM - by Brad Cook
Apple's release of the flash-based iPod nano will have repercussions for the one-inch hard disk drive (HDD) market, which now stands to lose sales of about three million units in 2005, according to research firm The Information Network. Michael McManus, writing for DigiTimes, reports that "Apple's strength in the MP3 market will alter the course of the HDD market for 2005 and 2006," according to Information Network president Dr. Robert N. Castellano.
Mr. Castellano also adjusted next year's estimate of one-inch HDD shipments from 37 million units to 19.8 million units, simply because "removing the iPod mini from the market and substituting it with a flash-based iPod nano will effectively eliminate 17.2 million one-inch HDD drives from the market in 2006," he told Mr. McManus.
Of course, Mr. Castellano is assuming a 1:1 replacement of the iPod mini by the nano, and that the lower capacity and higher cost of the new MP3 player will not mean a loss of overall market share for the iPod line. Mr. McManus wrote: "However, Apple's decision to drop the mini was based on its internal analysis, surveys and focus groups, and surveys taken by The Information Network indicate that Apple made the correct move."
