Orcon May Get New Zealand iPhone Deal

Another international iPhone rumor has gained traction, with the New Zealand Herald reporting Wednesday (Thursday, in NZ time) that Orcon has been tipped to be the iPhone carrier in that country. New Zealand fans of the device have been waiting for an announcement on when the iPhone would be released, with Vodafone at the center of speculation.

Vodafone lost out on the UK iPhone deal to competitor O2, but should Orcon be the winner of the New Zealand deal, it won’t be completely out of luck. Orcon, currently a broadband-only provider, can only offer cell-phone service in the first place because it signed a deal with Vodafone to share that company’s cell network.

Neither Apple nor Orcon would confirm or deny the deal, though Orcon CEO Scott Bartlett did play coy with the Herald, saying, "At the moment only one other carrier in the world has what we’re going to offer. We may not be the only carrier by the time we launch - we don’t know - but at this stage, yeah."

For its part, Vodafone claimed only to be watching the situation. Paul Brislen of Vodafone said, "Apple haven’t even announced a date for launching it in New Zealand so we’re just waiting."

Thanks to TMO and iPO forum member LaurieF for the heads up on this development.
