PJC: Teen Interest in iPhone High, iPod Still Gaining Market Share
Sunday, October 14th, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Interest in the iPhone is high amongst teenagers, 3 percent of those surveyed own one, an additional 9 percent expect to buy one in the next six months, and iPod market share has risen to 82 percent, according to Piper Jaffray analysts Gene Munster and Michael Olson.
Piper Jaffray conducted its 14th bi-annual teen survey, polling 980 teenagers, and reported the results in a report dated October 10th, obtained by iPO.
In addition, of the 36 percent who legally purchase music online, 79 percent said they use iTunes, down from 89 percent in the last survey.
The principal conclusion was: "Apples dominance in the portable media and online music markets is going seemingly unchecked. Also, iPhone ownership after just over two months of sales is already meaningful. We believe that the teen demographic is a critical component of long-term growth in the digital and mobile markets, and Apple is clearly strong in both categories."
The investment recommendation for APPL was "outperform."
Other notable results in the survey showed:
iPod ownership by teens went from 56 percent in the spring of 2005 to 82 percent in the fall of 2007.
While the percentage of teens who download music from P2P servers is declining, it is stil substantially more (64%) than via iTunes (36%).
Projections indicate that Apple will have Net Sales of US$29B in 2008 and US$35B in 2009
