Patent Filing Reveals Wireless iPod Syncing
Tuesday, August 15th, 2006 at 3:00 PM - by Brad Cook
Apple has filed a patent with an overseas office that shows how an iPod could wirelessly sync music with a computer, either through built-in capabilities or by being placed in a wireless dock. AppleInsider quoted the filing as saying: "The infrastructure of the wireless network can include one or more of 802.11 systems, Bluetooth systems, 900 MHz systems, or other localized wireless data transfer means."
Apple also said that the technology would incorporate its FairPlay digital rights management, placing restrictions on wireless synching if a particular iPod wasn't authorized to download iTunes Music Store content from a certain computer. In addition, the company left the door open for situations where "a vehicle, bag or case, can house or contain the media player and also optionally provide wired/wireless communication capability," it said in the filing.
A DigiTimes report said that Apple "has begun dispatching its staff to its major markets in Asia, to teach local sales how to demonstrate [a wireless iPod]," according to its sources. Apple Taiwan, however, denied that such activity was happening. Apple has been long-rumored to be working on a wireless iPod, but the high battery consumption imposed by such technology is believed to be an impediment to implementing it.
