Plotting the iPhone Popularity Map

Apple's iPhone is generating lots of buzz, even though it hasn't hit store shelves yet. Whether or not that buzz translates into the same success the iPod has earned, however, remains to be seen. Sascha Segan, writing for Fox News, speculates that Apple's choice to offer the iPhone exclusively through Cingular may limit the iPod/cell phone combo to the same marketshare the Mac sees instead of the market dominance of the iPod.

"I think the iPhone will be more of a Mac: a cult item that will influence, rather than dominate, its industry," he said. "Why? The biggest reason is that devil's bargain with Cingular."

The multi-year deal with Cingular locks out the other big name cellular providers including T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon - which means that the majority of cell phone users are automatically blocked from using the iPhone unless they choose to abandon their current carrier.

The iPod, on the other hand, is open to Mac and Windows users, and supports the popular MP3 music file format. That openness is part of what helped propel the iPod to the top of the digital music player market, according to Mr. Segan.

The innovation of the Mac interface has historically set the standard for other operating system developers, and now the iPhone is likely to do the same for the cell phone industry. To see if the iPhone becomes a market dominator or just another niche player, we'll have to wait until it makes its way to consumer's hands.
