Q&A with Mr. Jobs on the UK iPhone
Monday, September 17th, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
A Q&A session with Matthew Key and Steve Jobs at the O2 rollout focused on why the UK iPhone is not a 3G mobile phone. Slash Gear posted notes on the session.
Asked about Apples plans for a 3G iPhone, Mr. Jobs reiterated his previous statements about how the 3G radio draws too much power. Apple likes the 8 hour battery life with EDGE and would want at least 5 hours with 3G. [With current batteries, thats apparently not possible.]
Other questions were about length of contract, 18 months, and whether the Starbucks deal would come to the UK, "Maybe. Ask Starbucks," Mr. Jobs said.
Mr. Jobs declined to make any comments about plans for the rest of Europe. When asked about angering carriers who lost out to be the iPhone partner, Mr. Jobs brought up an analogy about how, a few days before one gets married, there might be a few angry girlfriends.
While some observers are saying that the high price of the iPhone will discourage many customers, perhaps there was neverthless no shortage of "angry girlfriends" wanting to test that hypothesis.
