RIAA Extracts $3,000 from Hundreds of College Students
Sunday, May 13th, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
The RIAA has sent letters to students at the University of Nebraska Lincoln accusing them of illegal downloading. The letter demands US$3,000 to settle out of court or face a $750 fine in court for each song downloaded, according to SciTech News on Monday.
Sarah Barg got one of those letters for downloading some 1980s ballads and Spice Girls tunes in her dorm room.
"Obviously I knew it was illegal, but no one got in trouble for it," Ms. Barg said. She was one of 61 students at UNL who received similar letters. Her parents paid the settlement fee. "I dont know what I would have done. Im only 20 years old," she said.
"Any student on any campus in the country who is illegally downloading music may receive one of these letters in the coming months," said Jenni Engebretsen, an RIAA spokeswoman. Ms. Engebretsen also revealed that at least 500 students in the U.S. have paid similar settlements in their efforts to change student attitudes. "...money from the settlements is reinvested in educational programs schools and other groups can use to spread the word that song sharing can have severe consequences," Anna Bratton reported.
The U.S. Congress has also let colleges know they they are concerned and have sent letters to 19 universities asking for information about the schools anti-piracy policies.
Kelly Bartling, a university spokeswoman, warned students about the impact and the worries about paying tuition when confronted by an expensive RIAA settlement. "It is a hugely expensive lesson," she said.
Some students dont think this tactic is the way to solve the problem. UNL freshman Andrew Johnson, who also settled for $3,000, said, "People are still going to do it until they get caught, and they cant catch everyone."
