An Evening with George Shearing & Mel Torm

Report: Opera’s Claims of App Store Denial a "Publicity Stunt"
Sunday, November 2nd, 2008 at 3:00 PM - by Bryan Chaffin
A New York Times article last week that said Apple had denied the Opera Mini Web browser for the iPhone may not have been accurate, according to PCWorld article on the subject. Daniel Ionescu quotes an Opera executive as saying that the company hasnt yet even submitted a mobile browser release to Apple.
After the initial story broke that Apple had denied approval of Operas mobile browser for the App Store because it competed with Apples own Safari Web browser, Mr. Ionescu spoke with Tor Odland, Director of Corporate Communications for Opera. Mr. Odland told him, "Opera has not yet submitted a version of Opera Mini to Apples App Store, but may do so in the future."
This directly contradicts Opera CEO and Cofounder Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner, who told the New York Times last week that Apple had denied Opera Mini for the above-mentioned reason.
Which executive has the facts right is up for grabs at the moment. Mr. Ionescu suggests that the initial story from Mr. Tetzchner is a "publicity stunt," and if so it would be the first time that weve noticed Apples own policies of secrecy and control being used against the company. That said, it is also possible that Operas CEO known more than its communications director.
