Research Group Says Blu-Ray Will Thrive
Tuesday, March 25th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
The number of Blu-ray drives sold to customers will rise steadily, according to a study by Strategy Analytics released on Tuesday. By 2012, the report projected annual sales of over 57 million units worldwide.
The report from Strategy Analytics, summarized by HDTV Magazine on Wednesday, said that Sonys PS3 will be the principal driver of Blu-ray player devices until 2009. After that, stand alone players will be the dominant segment.
SA predicted that in 2008, the 18.8 million Blu-ray players sold will be comprised of 4 million stand alone players, 13 million [game] consoles and 2 million PCs. In time, Europe is expected to lead the way by 2012 with over 26M devices followed by the US at 22.6M and Japan at 8.4M.
The report is another piece in the puzzle as to when Internet downloads will, if ever, supplant physical devices. Several factors could slow down the adoption of Internet HD downloads, such as onerous DRM, lack of connectivity to rural homes, excessive compression and customer affection for the physical disks. The report reinforces the thinking that the two formats will coexist for a long time to come.
