Rogers Bends a Little on iPhone 3G Pricing

Rogers announced on Wednesday that it will offer a limited-time iPhone 3G deal with 6GB of data instead of the previously announced 1GB cap. The offer is likely in reaction to pressure from customer backlash over its iPhone 3G service plan prices in Canada.
The special offer will let iPhone 3G customers upgrade to 6GB of wireless data access a month as part of a special CA$30 a month plan when purchased along with any of Roger’s current voice plans.
The cell carrier will also open several of its stores at 8AM local time for the iPhone 3G launch on July 11. The stores will offer a free breakfast and will be giving away prizes as well.
Rogers earned itself a public relations black eye when it announced what customers saw as inappropriately high priced iPhone 3G service contracts and low monthly data caps. Angry customers began signing an online petition urging Rogers to rethink its contract rates and even went so far as to suggest current Rogers subscribers drop their contracts.
Rumor also surfaced that Apple was snubbing its Canadian iPhone partner by throttling back product shipments because of the pricing.
Apple’s iPhone 3G is set to go on sale on July 11 in about 20 countries. It will include support for faster 3G wireless data networks while maintaining support for EDGE, includes a built-in GPS, access to third-party applications through the App Store, and more.
The special Rogers iPhone offer is good through the end of August, which means that even though the company is bending under customer demands, it isn’t breaking.
