Rumor: iPhone nano Coming for Christmas

If unconfirmed rumors are correct, the iPhone family is due to get a diminutive addition in time for the holiday buying season. The smaller version of the combination iPod and smartphone, dubbed "iPhone nano," will likely sport a form factor similar to the second generation iPod nano, according to Mail Online.

The iPhone nano would presumably come with a lower price tag to match its smaller size, which could help boost sales of the popular smartphone line even more. A nano version of the iPhone, however, could potentially also cut into iPhone 3G sales.

Additional details on the alleged iPhone nano are thin. There is no word, for example, on whether or not it will include a touch interface like the iPhone 3G and iPod touch, if it will offer an iPod-style Click Wheel interface, or if it will sport a completely different interface.

Apple launched the iPhone 3G, the second generation version of its iPhone, on July 11 in about 20 countries around the world, and the company plans to complete launches in about 70 countries before the end of the year. Since the iPhone nano would likely be rolling out in these markets at the same time, the smaller version of the cell phone could eat into potential sales of its larger cousin, and that isn’t a scenario Apple seems inclined to go for. Apple’s track record leans more towards saturating a market at specific price points before releasing lower priced versions of a product.

Apple’s policy prohibits commenting on unannounced products, so until the company actually does release a smaller version of the iPhone, the iPhone nano rumors should be taken with a healthy dose of salt.
