Another pillar of my musical foundations, The Stooges' first album is one those records whose influence far outweighed its popularity. Like The Velvet Underground & Nico, hordes of people wh

Samsung Abandons Music Service
Wednesday, November 2nd, 2005 at 2:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Samsung has reversed itself, and is not going to develop a service that competes with iTunes, according to the Pioneer Press. The company previously told the Korea Times that it was was in the development stages of an iTunes-like application and service to sell music downloads.
Choi Gee-sung, president of Samsung's digital media business, originally said "We are now in talks with our partners to debut a service program like iTunes of Apple," but now has commented "We are not at all interested in a music service ourselves."
He went on to say that Korean reporters misunderstood his earlier comments.
Samsung's decision, along with Mr. Gee-sung's comments are surprising, especially since the company confirmed in October the plans to develop a music service.
Samsung's new stance is that it will provide technical support for partners, including Napster, Yahoo!, and Microsoft, that are offering music services in an effort to bolster its own MP3 player sales.
Mr. Gee-sung stated "Our partners have failed to provide competitive software like iTunes," according to Reuters.
Language barriers aside, Mr. Gee-sung's original comments seem fairly clear. Samsung's new comments, however, may very well be a clarification on earlier statements. On the other hand, the company may have decided not to take on Apple in a battle they are likely to lose.
