Samsung Introduces Full Touch Screen Cell Phone

Samsung introduced Thursday the Ultra Smart F700, a full touch-screen cell phone that, in some ways, is similar to Apple's soon-to-be-released iPhone. The phone is part of the company's Ultra product line, and is set to be officially demonstrated at the 3GSM World Congress next week.

The phone has a 2.78" color display (440 x 240), a 5 mega-pixel camera with auto-focus, and Bluetooth. With support for the High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) network, users can download large files at speeds up to 7.2 Mbps. Samsung said it includes a full HTML browser, e-mail, and other data services. The device measures 104 x 50 x 16.4mm.

In comparison, iPhone has a 3.5" color display (480 x 320), a 2 mega pixel camera, and Bluetooth. For broadband connections to the Internet, Apple's phone supports Wi-Fi (802.11b/g) + EDGE + Bluetooth 2.0. It includes a fully functional Web browser, e-mail client, and contacts and calendar features. iPhone measures 115 x 61 x 11.6mm.

In addition to sporting a full touch screen, the F700 has a built-in QWERTY keyboard for direct input, for, as Samsung put it, "those who are not yet familiar with a touch-screen-only user interface." Volume, play lists, brightness of screens as well as other menu controls can be controlled utilizing the touch screen.

Samsung has not yet added the F700 to its Web site.
