Slate to Begin Lexus-Sponsored iPod ‘Textcasts’
Sunday, May 14th, 2006 at 3:00 PM - by Brad Cook
Online magazine Slate will next week start offering iPod "textcasts" sponsored by Lexus. According to Adweek, the publication will offer its daily "Today's Papers" feature in the format, attaching the text to a 15-minute silent audio file. Users will see a Lexus logo where album art is typically shown.
Slate publisher Cliff Sloan told reporter Brian Morrissey that he launched the initiative because e-book readers have been slow to take off. "What's been missing has been the ubiquity of the device," he said. "With the iPod there is a ubiquitous device."
Mr. Morrissey noted that while testing showed some difficulty in using the navigation wheel to scroll through stories, the text "is surprisingly readable," according to Slate senior editor Andy Bowers.
More textcasts might follow in the future, Mr. Sloan said. Slate currently offers two daily podcsts that see 800,000 total monthly downloads.
