Smartphone Market Needs to Prep for iPhone 3G Tsunami

Apple’s iPhone 3G is set to have a major impact on the smartphone market after it hits store shelves on July 11. According to a ChangeWave survey, 56 percent of the 3,567 respondents plan to buy an iPhone in the next 90 days.

The news follows a steady increase in market share for the iPhone based on ChangeWave studies. Apple’s handheld has managed to gain market share on four consecutive surveys, and is about to overtake Palm -- the second place smartphone company behind RIM -- and could start closing the gap on RIM, too.

"So, what’s the most likely explanation for such a large-scale projected increase in smart phone buyers going forward?" asks Changewave. "It’s the anticipation and publicity surrounding the imminent release of the 3G iPhone."

The survey results focus on the 10.5 percent of the respondents that actually plan on buying a new smart phone in the next 90 days, dramatically reducing the total number of participants that are seriously planning to make a purchase. While an overall small number compared to the total number respondents, it marks a sharp increase compared to the company’s last survey where 7.4 percent were planning to buy a smart phone.

The percentages, however, show that interest in Apple’s combination iPod and smartphone is strong. That interest could spell trouble for RIM, and certainly is bad news for Palm and its aging Treo.
