Sony Developing Competitor to iTunes
Sunday, December 17th, 2006 at 2:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Sony has been developing a movie download service as a competitor to iTunes that may be introduced in early 2007. This was reported by the Financial Times on Sunday and the WSJ on Monday [Subscription required.]
Like Apple's current movie service which started with Disney movies, Sony's service will launch with movies from Sony Picture Entertainment. Sony may also bypass downloads to a computer and allow a direct download to a PSP which uses the UMD format.
Early this year, Endgadget reported that UMD wasn't doing well. and support by the movie studios is diminishing. Finally, this announcement raises questions about Apple's prospects to add movies from Sony Pictures to the iTunes portfolio, perhaps in exchange for selling Blu-ray drives in new Macs in 2007.
