Sun Continues to Push Java for iPhone
Thursday, April 24th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by Bryan Chaffin
While Apples current iPhone SDK doesnt permit it, Sun continues to push for the implementation of Java ME, according to InfoWorld. The two companies are in discussion.
Java Micro Edition (ME) is uniquely suited to small, mobile devices, and Sun would certainly like to see Java apps available for the iPhone at some point.
"Weve expressed our intent to do this and our desire, really, to work with Apple to build a JVM (Java Virtual Machine) for the iPhone and were sort of moving forward with that," said Eric Klein, Suns V.P. of Java marketing earlier this week.
Sun is also working with a company called Innaworks to allow developers to build Java apps and submit them for inclusion in the App Store. Innaworks will demo that technology at the JavaOne conference at Moscone Center in San Francisco, May 5 to 9. [Apple does not have a booth at the show, but no doubt Apple and Sun engineers will be talking.]
Mr. Klein added that Apple knows what Sun is doing, and the two companies are talking about the technology. The Apple SDK would have to be amended to allow for Java ME built apps.
Apple certainly wants to maintain control of the iPhone, and Suns efforts could be in vain, for now. It may come down to Sun being able to make a compelling case for Java and both its strengths as an objected oriented language and its inherent security.
