Survey Reveals Strong Awareness of iPhone by General Public

A survey by M:Metrics has revealed that 56 percent of British and 64 percent of American mobile phone users are aware of the iPhone. About one in seven American polled said they would be interested in buying one. This widespread awareness may be key to Apple’s success with the iPhone.

"This data confirms that the iPhone has sparked the imaginations of consumers and is not merely a topic of conversation among insiders and technology enthusiasts," observed Mark Donovan, senior vice president and senior analyst, M:Metrics. "Nineteen million Americans reported strong interest in purchasing an iPhone an impressive figure, when you consider that the installed base of most high-end devices rarely approaches one million and respondents were informed of the price point as well as of the AT&T exclusive."

AT&T’s strategy with the iPhone has been to have such an attractive phone that they would be able to acquire new customers by taking them away from other providers. "This is an early indication that AT&T’s strategy to use the device to lure customers from competitors could pay off," commented Mr. Donovan.

M:Metrics also examined the current iPod ownership. "It’s also interesting to note that in both geographies, 64 percent of those with a strong interest in buying an iPhone already own an MP3 player, compared to a market average of 30 percent for other music phones owners," Mr. Donovan said, "so it will be interesting to see at what rate consumers replace their digital music player with an iPhone."

While there are other phones that have better features than the iPhone in some functions, the widespread knowledge of the iPhone could overcome that effect. The iPhone success will also propel other mobile phone manufaturers to try to mimic it. The question is, whether they can create enough a buzz to overcome the Apple marketing juggernaut.
