TVPredictions: Apple TV is Dead

Apple TV sales have been "horribly low," according to TVPredictions.com on Monday, a site that specializes in TV Technology news and analysis.

Phillip Swann, a TV technology analyst, said that the Apple TV sales are so low that he expects Apple to pull the device from the market next year. The analysis is based on undisclosed "retail sources."

To date, Apple has declined to divulge its sales numbers for the Apple TV.

Video retailers have reported that customers have expressed little interest in watching videos stored on their PC and beamed to their large large screen TV. In an accompanying video report, Mr. Swann commented on how poor standard videos look when presented on a HDTV. Even though the Apple TV is capable of 720p/24, Apple has yet to make HD videos of that resolution available for purchase.

Mr. Swann reported that Apple has refused to release sales figures for Apple TV because it knows "how poorly it’s performing at retail."

iPO notes that Mr. Swann likely only has data from retailers authorized to sell the Apple TV, and most of Apple’s sales are probably through their own retail stores. The picture may not be as bad as it looks. In addition, the window for Apple to offer HD content is very long, and the prognosis may not be as dour as Mr. Swann predicted.
