Tackling 10 iPod vs. Zune Myths

Writing on his blog Roughly Drafted, Daniel Eran on Tuesday ran down what he called "Ten iPod vs. Zune Myths," starting with the Zune's highly-touted three-inch display. As Mr. Eran pointed out, the Zune and the iPod both use the same resolution, thus negating some of the advantage of a larger display.

On a related note, myth number two explains that the Zune's horizontal display mode doesn't offer a true widescreen 16 x 9; it's merely a 4 x 3 aspect ratio flipped on its side. And all of the talk about the Zune's LCD is moot, at least for now, because it won't gain video playback until the middle of November, as explained in myth three.

Moving on, Mr. Eran explained that the Zune won't have support for notes, tasks, calendars, contacts or games, nor Audible audiobooks or podcasts, which means that the Zune isn't giving the same experience for the same price as a 30GB video iPod. The rest of his article details the Zune's wireless functionality, which he doesn't find very compelling, and the possibility that Microsoft will aggressively cut Zune pricing to gain market share or subscription income (the second has been compared to cell phone carriers' business models, which Mr. Eran noted are much different).

In addition, he covered the false sense of excitement generated by Microsoft's attempts at astroturfing (read the article if you don't know what that means). Myth number ten was devoted to Zune's brown color option, which isn't a myth but seems like an odd choice.
