Taiwan Cell Carrier in Talks with Apple about iPhone

Chungwa Telecom, a cell carrier in Taiwan, is in talks with Apple to carry the iPhone in that country, according to Chungwa vice president Shih Mu-piao. Reuters reported Wednesday that the exec claimed to be in talks with Apple, but noted that nothing had been finalized.
The news comes on the heels of similar reports from China Mobile about an iPhone deal in the world’s most populous country. That news helped propel Apple up more than 10% during heavy trading on Tuesday.
Mr. Mu-piao told Reuters, "I am sure they (Apple) will start out with the larger markets, like China, first," and he declined to give a timeline for when the iPhone would be released in Taiwan.
He also noted that many Asian cell phone users want devices that work on 3G networks, a feature that the iPhone does not yet support. Because of this, he told Reuters, it could take some time for Apple to be ready for Asian markets.
