TheStreet: Apple Declares iPhone Martial Law
Thursday, October 11th, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Apple is telling its customers, you will use the network we tell you to use, and you will use the applications we tell you to use, according to analysis by TheStreet on Friday.
Brett Arends imagined a situation in which General Motors told customers that they could only buy gas from Exxon stations. Further. GM agents enter your car and remove unapproved accessories. Citing a fictional Apple spokesperson, Mr. Arends wrote, "Customers are only allowed to have a radar detector, or a new seat cover, when we say so."
The scenario is fiction, but Mr. Arends believes this is how Apple has been acting.
"Memo to Apple: You guys are kidding, right?" Mr. Arends quipped.
He went on to note that Apple may face a legal challenge in France. "Under a 1998 French law, youre not allowed to keep a mobile phone locked to a single network. Vive la France!" the analyst wrote.
Then, Mr. Arens identified the basic problem: "Here, the law does nothing."
In the end, that may be the point of it all. Many are hoping that all this legal fuss results in changes to U.S. laws that will give customers want they want with their mobile phones. Time will tell.
