    • Ray LaMontagne
    • At first, Ray LaMontagne might strike you as just another breathy-voiced knockoff of folk/rock guitarists like John Mayer and Jack Johnson. But he's actually got a better voice than either, he tell

    • Alanis Morissette
    • Ten years after the original release, comes the traditional celebratory acoustic re-recording. The album has held up remarkably well. While it is not as meaningful to me as it was when I was sixteen,

The Apple iPhone and "OS X"

At Macworld, Apple introduced to us, for the first time, to the term "OS X." The usage eliminates the term "Mac" from the OS name without changing the fundamental character of the OS -- which was designed to enable more robust applications in the iPhone, such as Safari. This is in contrast to crippled mobile phone Browsers that use the WAP protocol. Even so, many have remained confused and even questioned whether OS X could run on an iPhone.

John Gruber at the Daring Fireball on Tuesday provided some insight, "...the iPhones version of OS X contains everything from Mac OS X thats applicable to a mobile phone, plus new bits specific to the phone. Its a "full" version of OS X not because it contains everything from Mac OS X, but because it contains everything youd actually want from Mac OS X."

Deprecating the term "Mac" for this embedded OS serves many purposes. It suppresses the unwanted memories of the Mac vs. PC wars. It brands a new embedded OS that may also be used in other devices like the Apple TV, and it eliminates the mistaken idea that this iPhone can only be used with Macintoshes.

The elimination of the word "Computer" from Apple's corporate name, the elimination of the word "Mac" from the OS of an iPhone and the Apple TV product all foretell a company that is poised to leverage its strengths and entice customers into elegant consumer electronics solutions without the vestiges of Mac vs. PC wars.
