The First Apple TV with a Solid State Drive

In order to beat the heat, an Apple TV user has replaced the hard disk in his Apple TV with a Solid State Disk (SSD), according to Apple TV Hacks. It’s not any faster, but the unit runs a lot cooler -- at some expense.

Josh Lee described how he replaced the factory installed 40 GB hard disk in his Apple TV with a new, state-of-the-art Transcend 32 GB SSD that cost him US$160.00. Mr. Lee said that the Transcend SSD was the not the most expensive available, so it wasn’t significantly faster than the original drive, but that’s wasn’t the goal.

The process, however, required some expertise. Mr. Lee had to remove the Apple TV drive, connect it to his Mac, do a little magic with Diskutil, and re-write the image back the SSD. Once the SSD was installed back into the Apple TV, he did a factory restore.

Now Mr. Lee is up and running with his Apple TV sans all the heat. As for the reduced disk space, he doesn’t have much need for it. He stores everything on his Network Attached Storage (NAS).

The user notes, via e-mail, are somewhat abbreviated and cryptic. Anyone attempting the same process without previous experience may wish to contact Mr. Lee via Apple TV Hacks for more details.

Given the current low price of OEM’d 40 GB drives, it’s doubtful well see anything like this from Apple soon. Even so, it’s a fun glimpse into what the future may hold in store.
