The New Laser HDTVs
Monday, March 5th, 2007 at 3:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Rear Projection HDTVs, such as DLP and LCoS have been at a disadvantage compared to flat panel Plasma and LCD TVs because of their physical depth. But a new generation of laser driven HDTVs seeks to eliminate that problem, according to the HDTV Almanac on Tuesday.
RPTVs, typically 15 to 18 inches deep are somewhat more bulky to handle and arent as sleek as the more popular but somewhat optically inferior LCD sets that are a mere 4 inches thick. And customers arent fond of spending, perhaps $200, for a new lamp and installing it themselves when the old one burns out.
"Instead of calling their products RPTVs, they will refer to them as "Laser TVs".... And they refer to the fact that instead of the typical lamp that only lasts a few thousand hours, these televisions will use solid state lasers as a light source. According to the president of Novalux, a company that is building these tiny lasers, this light source will be 10,000 times brighter than a high-brightness LED and three to four times more power efficient. The lasers should have a lifetime of at least 30,000 hours when driven at 100%, without any loss of brightness. And unlike LEDs, the color will not shift as a result of aging or temperature changes," the report said.
In addition, the brighter lasers allows smaller optics and a shorter light path. This will allow the new Laser TVs to be much thinner. Novalux predicted that a 65-inch TV would be only 6 inches deep and be much more energy efficient.
Sony has already demonstrated one model at CES, and these next generation HDTVs are expected before the end of 2007.
