The Three Things Blu-ray Can do to Win Now

There are three things that the Blu-ray camp can do right now that will win the format war with HD DVD in 3 to 6 months. Otherwise, the war could linger on for at least two more years, according to TVPredictions on Thursday.

Here’s the list of the the killer moves Blu-ray should make:

  1. Lower Blu-ray player prices to US$199 for the holidays.
  2. Release more classic movies in Blu-ray
  3. Offer cash to retailers to back Blu-ray exclusively for the holidays

Sony and its Blu-ray partners would have to subsidize the cost of lower players. But the choice is to lose some money now and win the war or let the fight linger on indefinitely.

Phillip Swann of TVPredictions also thinks that getitng a larger selection of classics out there will give buyers a reason to move. So far, the studios have been holding back for reasons unknown. "Get those classic movies out this holiday season and give people a reason to buy that Blu-ray player," Mr. Swann said.

Others have previously reported, however, that one of the reasons Blu-ray has been able to engage hardware partners is the prospect of better profit margins on Blu-ray players. Toshiba is strongly suspected of losing money on each HD DVD player. So the Blu-ray camp has a tough decision to make.

In most cases, this kind of competition is good for the consumer pocketbook, but few customers and retailers appreciate the lingering war, and most want it to end. These moves could make that happen.
