Thomson Leaves the MP3 Player Market

Thomson announced plans to sell off its MP3 player division on Monday. The company sited that it can’t compete with the likes of Apple and the iPod, and other Asian MP3 makers, and plans on finalizing a sale by the end of June 2006, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Thomson’s MP3 player division, called Connectivity by Thomson, also handles audio and video accessories, and home and business telephones. Its MP3 players are distributed in the United States under RCA’s Lyra product line.
Thomson is just one of digital music player manufacturers to leave the market this year. Olympus, Virgin Electronics, and Rio, among others have succumbed to the iPod’s dominance.
